Jonah’s Repentance

Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the stomach of the fish, and he said,

I called out of my distress to the LORD, And He answered me. I cried for help from the depth of Sheol; You heard my voice. For You had cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the current engulfed me. All Your breakers and billows passed over me. So I said, I have been expelled from Your sight. Nevertheless I will look again toward Your holy temple. Water encompassed me to the point of death. The great deep engulfed me, Weeds were wrapped around my head. I descended to the roots of the mountains. The earth with its bars was around me forever, But You have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD my God. While I was fainting away, I remembered the LORD, And my prayer came to You, Into Your holy temple. Those who regard vain idols Forsake their faithfulness, But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving. That which I have vowed I will pay. Salvation is from the LORD. (Jonah 2:1-9 NASB)

This was Jonah’s cry of repentance. The Lord heard him and had the great fish vomit him out of it’s mouth so that now Jonah could continue on to fulfill his destiny.

Then the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land. (Jonah 2:10 NASB)

We know that a lot more happens in this story that you should probably read and get even more revelation from God, but for our purpose we are looking at the repentance aspect.

God wanted to save the people of Nineveh and it was part of Jonah’s mandate to be a part of that. His own rebellion was closing the door to his destiny and things were not put right until he repented.

In our own lives, we want to be used of God to fulfill our purpose also. The problem many times is that there is something in the way, there is a stumbling block of some sort. It doesn’t have to be rebellion, it can be something from the past we haven’t thought about in years. I have spoken to many people trying to help them figure out where their breakthrough is and I have asked them about sins of the past.

“Brother Mike, God knows I haven’t done that in years. That is ancient history.” Yes, but the bible doesn’t say “if enough time goes by, all sins are forgiven.” The bible says…

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9 KJV)
